Nero walked into the small, crowded Lecana Training Arena, and let out all of the pokemon in his party. Cliodna, his Ninetales, Tempeste, his Swablu, Vulcan, his Steelix, Bacchus, his Aipom, Tethys, his Lapras and Narcissus, his Gallade.
"Okay, guys, here's what we're gonna do. You're all going to be paired off in order of strength, okay? So It's Tems versus Nars. Clio versus Tethys and Bac versus Vul. We'll make it a tournament. Okay? Now then, Here's what I want you to do for the first round. You need to build up your attack and special attack, evasion, accuracy, speed and defense. This means you need to be in a battle situation. Ready? Tems and Nars first."
Tempeste and Narcissus were Nero's strongest pokemon, so this was the higher tier of the tournament. The other four made sure to take notes.
Round One - Higher Tier - Tempeste versus Narcissus
Narcissus, who was normally quite lazy and self-centred seemed to have no problem battling Tems, who'd become a bit of a rival to him. He began with a Double Team, twice, so it was really a "quadruple team". The four Gallades then began using Teleport, mixed with a more elaborate version of the Dance-Fighting of Kirlia and Medicham. Tems was utterly confused by this sudden combination of deception and strategy, and despite her type advantage, succumbed to a powerful Fury Cutter attack...
But that was all she needed. Once she'd been hit, she was able to determine which Gallade was the real one, and strike with a vivacious Peck attack. However, Nars used Teleport just before the attack hit, and reappeared beside Tems. Tems, having a sudden stroke of brilliance, used her Sing attack, causing Nars (who was naturally lazy anyway) to fall asleep, dispelling the duplicates, and rendering his Double-Teleport strategy useless. Tems then attacked with a furious Fly attack, being able to take her time due to the sleeping Gallade.
The shock from the attack woke Gallade up, and he stuck back with a Fury Cutter, followed by a Slash, sending Tems flying out of the window. She returned through the door, striking at Narcissus with a Fly attack and following up with a super-effective Astonish attack, causing Nars to flinch, before following up with a Fury Attack, knocking Gallade to the floor...
Fainted.
Round One - Middle Tier - Cliodna versus Tethys
Cliodna was up against a major type disadvantage, but Tethys was less experienced. Nero was anxious to see the outcome of their battle. Tethys began with a commanding Surf attack, flooding the entire arena, and damaging Clio critically. Clio retaliated with a Will-o-wisp, which rendered Tethys with a burn, sapping away her health.
Teth then turned to the defensive. A well aimed sing attack managed to catch Clio, and the Ninetales fell asleep gracefully. Tethys then attacked with a powerful Ice Shard, increasing in severity with each strike, as Teth was able to compensate for the longer build-up by Clio's sleeping figure, a tactic she learned from watching Tems battle.
Clio, however, awoke and launched a rapid succession of quick attacks and embers, which both did neutral damage due to Teth's Water/Ice typing. She then launched a Roar attack, and although Nero didn't allow Teth to return to her pokeball, she was still thrown against the wall of the arena. Just as she got up, weak, but ready to fight, she fell.
It was the burn, which caused her to faint in the end...
Round One - Lower Tier - Bacchus versus Vulcan
No-one was quite sure how this battle was going to be. Vulcan began with a Screech attack, weakening Bacchus' defence, leading him to be pummeled by a Rock Throw follow-up. Then, Vulcan launched into a Bind attack, but unfortunately, Vulcan was too big and cumbersome, and Bac was too frisky. He quickly scurried up Vulcan's body, using his tail to lift himself up, using the spikes on his armour as footholds. Finally, Bac entered Vul's mask.
Unable to reach the Aipom, Vulcan took to thrashing about, hoping to shake out the monkey, but Bac used his tail to steady himself, and attacked with Scratch repeatedly. Unable to retaliate, Vul fainted from the inside out.
"Well done, you three. We're all gonna heal, and then we'll have the semi-finals. 'K?"

Final Round - Three Way battle - Bacchus, Clio, Tems
The Three finalists took their marks. Bacchus the Aipom, Cliodna the Ninetales and Tempeste the Swablu. Bachus was first, launching a Fury Swipes attack at Clio. Clio prepared her counterstrike, but...
Tems jumped in the way!
The attack saved Clio, and did a lot less damage on Nero's strongest pokemon. Clio then used her Roar attack, sending Bacchus flying backwards. Nero was stunned, He could have sworn he saw Tems give Clio a wink, and then he understood. They had teamed up. If anything, it would improve their double-battle skills, but he wondered how they would cope with battling each other.
Clio followed up with an Ember, and Tempeste used her Fly attacks on the poor Aipom. Thereafter, Clio used Will-o-wisp and Tems used Sing. Bacchus fell asleep as he was burnt.
He didn't wake up again.
Now came the interesting part. Clio and Tems. They were like sisters to each other. But Clio and Tems would do what they had to. Nero knew so. Clio launched an Ember but missed. Tems used Fly, but swooped wrongly, and flew out of the window instead. She caught her leg and went careening into the floor, before hopping gently back. They were too reluctant to battle. And something very interesting was about to happen.
Safe in the knowledge that Clio wouldn't attack her, Tems rested her leg. When she looked back up, Clio had fainted. Bacchus had awoken, and in the confusion, had emerged victorious. Tems, in fury at the little purple monkey, used a barrage of Fury Attacks, silencing the simian once and for all. Faint.
Nero took the center of the arena again. "Here are the standings so far. Tems, in first, Bacchus in second, Clio in third. Gallade in fourth for creative battling, Vulcan in fifth for effort, Teth in sixth for losing against a type-advantage. Lets see if it all changes next time, but for now, well done to all of you"

Nero returned to the Shrine, Bacchus on his shoulder. "Right, let's practice double hit. Vulcan will use Rock Throw, Smash them before they reach the ground, ok?" he said, releasing his Steelix and his Aipom. "Alright, let's do this!"
Vulcan released his first rock. It was about the size of the Aipom. Bacchis launched up using his powerful tail, and then struck twice with his hands in a double punch motion. The first rock cracked open.
"That's right Bac, give it the 'one-two'. You're doing great!"
Then came a second rock. This one was a lot bigger, but it seemed to be softer. The Double Hit didn't so much crack it as dent it, but when Bac used his Fury swipes, they came apart easily.
"Great again! Now then, Vul! Use two of them!"
The two rock throws were too much for Bac to handle. He broke one, but the second one caught him off-guard. and he fell to the ground.
"Alright, again, but Vul, use smaller rocks this time, 'k?"
Suddenly, Bac had an idea. Using his tail, he kept throwing the rocks up into the air, and then he destroyed them to his leisure.
"Woah! That's great Bac! Here, have some Pokefood!" Bacchus came and nibbled on the Pokefood, and then began scarfing down the rest of the bag. Nero and Bacchus began to laugh. "Alright, I guess you've deserved it!"
