Vera skipped down the road quickly, determined to try out her new pokemon before they ran into any wild ones. "Go on - Sparky!" She shouted, throwing the pokeball out. Her handsome little shinx hopped out of it and looked at her curiously. "I'm Vera, your new trainer," she explained. "You're Sparky. Will you help me get to Shellau town safely?" Vera spoke in gentle tones, bending down and holding her arms out wide.
The shinx still looked cautious. Vera straightened up and sighed. "Alright, then. Let's go to the Berry Forest to look around for a little while. You might warm up to me a bit. Do you want to go back in your pokeball?" Sparky shook his head. "Alright," Vera replied, not wanting to push him, "Just walk next to me, then."

A Starly was perched in a nearby tree. The pokemon tilted its head slightly, watching the trainer interact with her new pokemon. This was interesting. It had never seen a human with wings before. Or perhaps, it wasn't human after all. Being curious, the pokemon swooped down and landed in front of Vera.
<Are you a pokemon?> the young pokemon asked innocently.

Vera smiled at the little starly. "No, see?" She took off her wings and turned them around, so the little pokemon could see the fastenings in the back. "I love to pretend I am, though."
Eyeing the starly more closely, Vera decided this would be a good chance to see what Sparky could do. "Well, you do seem like a rather strong bird," she said in a teasing sort of voice, "and I would have you as my own, unless you can defeat my little shinx here. What do you say?" She asked. Her hands felt the little pockets in her pack where the five pokeballs were kept; she could feel the hard bumps beneath the fabric of her backpack.

<Ohhhhhhhh,> the pokemon said in one drawn-out breath. He watched curiously as Vera took off her wings. <Does it hurt?> he asked. Apparently, the Starly didn't yet grasp the concept of "pretend."
The pokemon puffed up in pride when Vera complimented him. He was the youngest of four brothers and often picked on for that reason. <Yes, I guess I am quite strong. I accept your challenge.> The pokemon launched himself into the sky, ready to attack.

Vera grinned. If she caught the pokemon, she would try to explain the idea of costumes. She paused for a minute - the starly was just a bit to high for a tackle - then decided to weaken it so it would be easier to use the pokeball. "Go Sparky - leer!"

The starly felt it's guard drop as it decided to swoop at Shinx with a quick attack.
It carried through, it's back towards the shinx as it soared up into the sky again.

Vera took this opportunity to throw a pokeball at the starly's retreating back. She crossed her fingers, hoping it stayed inside.

The pokeball bounced easily off the starly. It clearly wasn't weak enough.
<That hurt.> said the Starly, before retreating up a tree. <What'chya do that for?>

Vera sighed. That should have been expected; she still had a lot to learn as a trainer. Sparky was staring at her in disbelief, and suddenly she felt her cheeks get a little hot. "Oh, alright. Sparky, tackle!" Her sphinx shrugged and lunged forward --

The starly was caught off guard and was blasted away by the strong tackle. It crashed down to the the ground and groaned, <Owwww...>.
