Jai walked slowly down the path. Fire. Freedom. ****. Forget it.
All of her pokemon were safely trapped in their capsules. This was a trek she desired to take on her own. The scars on her body were evidence of her own encounter with the viscious being which called itself Flame. For a while, it had her paralyzed. Paralyzed by her inability to walk normally- that had disappeared relatively soon after. But more so, paralyzed her ability to think clearly, to act unquestioningly. That was her life now. And now, she was learning to live with it, one big question mark in the larger story.
The men in the white coats had told her that she should stay, rest a few more days before continuing. But what did they know? They saw a girl in a wheelchair who needed months of physical therapy for recovery. They needed new glasses, she thought. She had proved them all wrong- or she would soon. Otherwise, she'd go up in flames, a wonderful exit, a finale to remember.
Ah yes, fire. It was her lover, wild and free. Ready to be conquered. And this time, Jai was no novice to the game.

A Typhlosion walked past, followed by a strange procession of pokemon. A large section of Quilava and Cyndaquil followed by Charmanders, Chimchars and Torchics. What a strange sight! They seemed to be muttering something about "Ceremonial Tail-relightings" as they walked past.

Tail relightings? Now that was a bit queer. Jai's attention had been caught. Perhaps she had walked in on some ancient pokemon ritual? The girl smiled. She followed the group of pokemon at a distance. This would be interesting...very interesting. She had always been a fan of fire pokemon. She took a special interest in the Charmanders in the group. That pokemon would make a nice addition to her team, assuming she could find one with a decent nature. And the Typhlosion. Though she didn't expect a pokemon of that stature to come with her, she wouldn't mind having a fight. Ah yes, Jai was back to her old self.

One of the Charmander from the back of the queue straggled off, and tripped over a loose rock. It began to wail to the sky, and instantly, the line stopped. The typhlosion rushed to the charmander, and quickly gave instructions to the other pokemon. He picked her up and took her to the front with him, not letting any harm befall her. But he caught sight of Jai...
<Who are you? Are you of the Kapa'uaua tribe? Or of the Torkinah-ha? Or are you one of the deathbringers from Ember Cliffs?> He eyed the girl suspiciously, and instantly, a charmeleon, combusken and monferno, who were leading the three smaller factions joined him.

The girl frowned when the little pokemon slipped. She was about to help it up when the Typhlosion came to the pokemon's aid. Oh well. There was always next time. Before she knew it, the pokemon was speaking to her. It seemed hostile to say the least. What was all this talk of Kapa'uaua? Torchi-whadda-wha? The girl contemplated her options for only a moment- the Typhlosion didn't seem like the type to patiently wait. She could either claim belonging to one of the groups mentioned...but that option was further complicated by the fact that she couldn't remember their names. Play dumb. Tell the truth. Run. The last one certainly wasn't an option. She still wasn't entirely steady on her legs, and all the smoke in the area would slow her down. Ever since the fire, the girl had been less tolerant of smoke.
The Charmeleon was distracting her. It reminded her so much of her parent's Charizard and her brother's Charmeleon. But this was no time to remember. She had to think fast.
"I am January Scott of the Hoenn Region. It is far from here. But, I have come to this place, seeking to become the best, a pokemon master." Well, that was cheesy. The girl shrugged. It was the best she could come up with under stress. "I come in peace, but if you attack, I am ready to fight." Jai's hand rested on a pokeball. It never hurt to be prepared.

The Typhlosion laughed heartily. <My dear girl, you talk as though we are spacemen. We do not wish to fight, although rest assured, we would easily overpower you or any of the other tribes here. The Kra'and-na are not at war, but in an era of blessed peace, as are the Sta'ary, the Kapa'uaua and the Torkinah-ha. It is only those brutes in the Ember Cliffs who are at war, and they have taken to sending spies to fight us. It is good to be sure...> He resumed his position at the head of the tribe, and gave quick instructions to the Quilava, who seemed to be his second-in-command. He quickly walked among the ranks, giving them the sign to relax. <We are on our way for our annual ceremony. This year is in the leadership of the Cynda-kai, so we are to relight our tail-flames. You are welcome to attend if you wish>

Jai exhaled. She hadn't realized that she had been holding her breath. Suddenly, her heart was beating...fast. This was so exciting. There was a war somewhere around here? But that wasn't what was exciting her. The whole tail lighting ceremony was fascinating to Jai.
"I'd love to see," she finally said before following Typhlosion and the other fire pokemon.

The Typhlosion led the mighty tribe to a geyser field, after which they began setting up a strange ritual. <Every year, the chieftaincy of the tribe shifts between the four families, so the rituals are tetrannual... We typhlosion, quilava and cyndaquil require the geyser heat to relight our inner flames. It is due to this we have such prodigious strength. Come child, sit, and witness a great event in passing...>

Jai nodded at what the Typhlosion said, though she didn't quite understand what good a geyser would do for a fire pokemon. It must be something more spiritual that physical. Jai never really could understand that sort of thing. She was more of a literal person, or so she thought of herself.
The girl sat down on a nearby rock, a good five or six feet away from the nearest pokemon. This would be interesting to observe. She tapped her foot somewhat absent-mindedly, waiting for the ceremony to begin.

As they approached, one by one, they waited for the geysers to erupt. As they did, a small flame was emitted, creating hundreds of spectacular flaming towers, clearly there was a small amount of helium in the geyser chemical make-up.
"Take a deep breath, girl. You're one of us now..."

The girl breathed deeply as the Typhlosion had commanded. She felt more at peace in that moment than she had in a very long time. Something about the large pokemon's power. A gentle, but powerful pokemon, one that it wouldn't be wise to double-cross. But since she seemed to have found favor in his eyes, she felt that she was safe, at least in this area. This newfound security allowed her to let her mind drift.
So many things had happened since that fateful day she had arrived in Kantex more than two years ago. Since then, she had been on quite the adventure- saving the lab from Breeder Herald, then reckoning her own past with the Dark Hand. But she couldn't help but wonder if that was truly over. And she had made friends too. At least, she thought they were her friends. If nothing else, she had built up a team of pokemon. There was a great deal of trust between them too.
"What do you mean, one of you?" she asked after a while when her mind had drifted back to their present situation.

"You are part of our tribe, sister. You are in the Cynda-kai family of the Kran'and-na tribe. We offer you our full protection and friendship sister of mine."
The geysers had stopped now, and all at once, all of the family lit their tail-flames, bigger and brighter than ever, while the other three families watched, enthralled.

"Thank you," she said, followed by, "I'm truly honored."
For a moment, she allowed her mind to wander, to wonder what it might be like to stay with this Fiery tribe forever. The Typhlosion himself had said that she was one of them. And surely she was one with the flame. Without thinking, she touched the scars on her face. Maybe she belonged here, here next to the geysers and volcanoes.
But, she knew in her heart that it couldn't be so. She was a restless child, perhaps cursed to wander the earth. But for now, she could enjoy this peace, couldn't she?
She watched the tail flames as they flared up, and for a moment, wished that she could be like them. Pokemon out here, in the wild, didn't have a care in the world. And to them, the flame was their friend, their life source. It had nearly destroyed her.

(I'm back! Yay, yay and a thousand million times yay!)
A lonely cyndaquil wandered up to Jai. It had small tears in it's eyes.
"You don't like fire, do you?"
It sighed miserably.
"My tail flame doesn't light up. So I feel left out."
It took a resting position by Jai's feet.
"The Quilava at the front," the cyndaquil said, pointing at a cocky looking male, "He's the Chieftain's son. And he says that I should just leave the Kran'and-na tribe, and defer to the Kapa'uaua. He's always hurting me, but the Chieftain won't believe it..."
A small tear came to it's eyes.
"I wish there were some way I could light up my tail flame..."

Jai smiled at the Cyndaquil. "No worries little one," she said softly, "Everything in its time, everything in its time." She was staring off into the distance now, hand rested on the pokemon's back. "One day, you'll become stronger stronger than them all...you'll show them...that power is truly over-rated. I mean, look what it did to you. Look what it did to you." That crazy girl was mumbling to herself again.

The Cyndaquil nodded. "It's been worse since my sister left. She was taken to the lab. Her name, it was Zequatl. She's probably forgotten me by now. Goodness. I miss my sister."
For a second there, the Cyndaquil's eye's (small and crescent shaped they may be) flashed gold, beams of light escaping his eyelids.
The mean Quilava turned to the Cyndaquil and smiled viciously.

"Zequatl?" Jai asked, "Well, I'm sure that she went to a very nice trainer. She's probably out there now. I dunno. Maybe she'll come back some day and see you. Trainers go by here often- it is a major route." Jai ignored the Quilava and focussed on the Cyndaquil. Memories flashed to her own brother. "I had a brother," she mumbled. "Don't know where he is now. Might even be dead. Prolly still in Hoenn. I dunno. Prolly still out there, training in Hoenn. Maybe I should go back there. Eh- could never go back there. Just hope he's alright."
ooc|| Zequatl. xDDDDDDD

The Cyndaquil flashed again. "That's not true." he said. "I can always tell if someone is lying because some firelight escapes my eyes. It's the only fire I've got. Your brother is not in Hoenn."
The Quilava sauntered over. "You're a weakling." he taunted.
The cyndaquil flashed.
"And a trickster with your eyes. And a sissy."
He eyed up Jai.
"Who else would hang out with a freak like her."
The Cyndaquil murmured something, angry tears rolling down his eyes.
"What was that, sonny?"
"You're a grade A jerk."
There was no flash. OoC:// WOW! What a COINCIDENCE! *cough*

Jai got up from where she was sitting.
"You two are brothers- of the same tribe. You shouldn't be fighting like this."
Flash. "What are you doing here?" Anger. Maybe fear in his eyes. "I- I wanted to find you." Stares at feet. They were still there. Unmoving. "I wanted to see you again." "You shouldn't have come. It's dangerous out here." "But-" "Go home. Go home Janny." "No! I won't go!" She was looking up now. Something new now. Something she had never seen in her brother's face before. Defeat. "Fine. You do have a pokemon?"
"Well, I really should be going now." Jai couldn't stay any one place for too long. "Best of luck to the both of you." She began to walk away. Perhaps she should invite the other along. She turned back to the 'quil. "You can, uh, come with me if you like. I mean, who knows- trainers run into eachother enough. Maybe you'll find your sister. Anyway, I'd be happy for the company."

The Cyndaquil walked up to Jai. It then turned back. "There's one thing I must do first."
He walked up to the Quilava and spat profoundly in it's face. It then stumbled into the pokeball.

Jai was vaguely amused by the Cyndaquil's actions. He had issues. Not that everyone else in this world didn't. He'd fit right in with the rest of her little monsters. Speaking of the little monsters, she hadn't felt the same connection with them that she felt in the past. There was something missing- gone. Something she had felt when she first came to Kantex with Darkaan and Herald, something that she had felt with her grandparents when she was a child, and though it ashamed her to say, something she had felt at times with the other members of the Dark Hand.
She shrugged and held out a pokeball to the 'quil. She would be happy for the company.
